The Panzer IV served in every theatre where Germany was active and was the sole German tank to remain in production throughout the war. Its original purpose was as infantry support, while the Panzer III was for fighting tanks. However, as the Germans came up against the formidable T-34, the Panzer IV had greater development potential, with a larger turret ring to mount more powerful guns, so the the two switched roles. The Panzer IV received various upgrades and design modifications, with the purpose of countering new threats, thus extending its service lifespan.
