The series 401 is an AC/DC commuter train developed for the Joban Line in 1960. It originally featured a low driver cab, but from car number 23 onward the cab was raised similar to the series 153. Until the mid 1980s, before a repaint to the white and blue stripe livery, these trains were known along the line as the red trains due to their standard AC/DC Red No. 13 (rose pink) paint scheme.
High Grade (HG) specifications
– Leading car reproduced as KUHA 401 with a raised driver cab and painted in the standard AC/DC Red No. 13.
– Overall length of the leading car and the position of the door cocks reproduced, reflecting differences from the series 113-0.
– Joban radio antenna piping molded and the antenna supplied as a separate preinstalled part.
– Voltage detection antenna on the roof of the leading car uses a conical base; a square base option is included as a replaceable part.
– Front through door crossing board on KUHA 401 supplied as a separate part, allowing selection of large or small size.
– MOHA series 400 underfloor reproduces the main transformer and features characteristic of AC/DC rolling stock.
– Head and tail lights plus front display equipped with a constant lighting board and an ON OFF switch.
– Head and tail lights and front display illuminated by incandescent LEDs.
– Front display uses a color prism to achieve a white like illumination.
– Front display is interchangeable and supplied with pre printed parts for Normal white.
– Car number is selectable and a transfer sheet is included.
– Flywheel equipped power unit for smooth operation.
– New current collection system and black wheels.
– M 13 motor.
– TN coupler SP is fitted as standard equipment.
