The series 183-0 is a DC express train introduced in 1972. With the opening of the Sobu Rapid Line between Tokyo and Kinshicho and the electrification of the Uchibo and Sotobo lines, these trains were built to upgrade some express services to limited express status. All units were assigned to Makuhari Electric Railway Depot. In 1985, some trains at Makuhari were converted to six-car mono-class formations and extended to nine cars during peak periods using connecting doors.
