EF81 is a dual-voltage electric locomotive introduced in 1968 capable of through running on the Sea of Japan main line with three types of electrification. Designed to haul both passenger and freight trains, some EF81s are still in service today. In 1999 three locomotives, numbers 79, 89 and 92, were repainted in the white-based Cassiopeia livery with yellow, orange and blue to coincide with the start of the Cassiopeia sleeper service; number 99 later received the same livery. EF81s also hauled Hokutosei, Elm and Yume Kukan trains and continued to operate until the arrival of the successor EF510 in June 2010.
