The 50 Series is a standard passenger car that debuted in 1978. It was a driving force in modernizing passenger transportation, replacing passenger trains operated primarily in regional urban areas with older passenger cars. Its unconventional red No. 2 paint scheme earned it the nickname “Red Train.” Featuring modern car bodywork with automatic doors, unit windows, and semi-cross seats, it contributed to easing congestion and improving safety. It served nationwide on regional lines alongside Hokkaido’s 51 Series passenger cars.

The 50 Series 51 passenger car was introduced for Hokkaido in 1979. A total of 130 cars were manufactured, and they operated on Hokkaido’s main trunk lines, spanning a wide area from Hakodate in the north to Wakkanai and east to Abashiri. However, it was retired in 1994, ahead of the 50 Series for warmer regions. It is an essential vehicle when talking about Hokkaido during the Japan National Railways era.
The 50 Series passenger car upgrade parts are comprised of separate parts for the roof panel and ventilator, which are often seen from above. By replacing them with the product’s roof panel (with integrated ventilator), you can achieve even greater precision. Please enjoy both.
