In the 1960s, when the residential development along Seibu Railway lines was not as widespread as it is today and the scenery of the Musashino area remained prominent, a group of trains known as “red trains” were in operation.
The most popular of these “red trains” was the 701 series, which was introduced in 1963 with the aim of improving train performance and eliminating older trains. A total of 48 train sets and 192 cars were manufactured. The 20m-long, three-door configuration was standard for Seibu at the time, with two large windows on the front, two headlights below the windows, a stainless steel decorative panel for reinforcement, and a large direction sign on top, establishing the basic style for Seibu trains thereafter. While a new-performance train, a notable feature of the 701 series is that its motor cars were constructed using TR11 bogies from older trains. A
4-car basic set and a 4-car add-on set allow you to recreate an 8-car (4+4) formation. You can also enjoy the world of Seibu Railways by combining it with the already available 5000 series “Red Arrow” and 101 series.
