The Ou Main Line, connecting Fukushima and Aomori via Yamagata and Akita, climbs the steep Itaya Pass after branching from the Tohoku Main Line. In 1968, when the Tohoku Main Line was converted to AC electrification, the section over Itaya Pass to Yonezawa was also converted and double tracked, removing a major bottleneck. The ED78 was introduced as the main motive power for the Ou Main Line and for weight-restricted lines such as the Senzan Line and Banetsu West Line. On the Ou Main Line it hauled the Akebono sleeper limited express, series 50 passenger coaches, and freight trains.
